The Birth of Acorn Hill Farm
"The birth of Acorn Hill Farm was the result of a series of wonderful accidents. The purchase of a property with a barn followed by the discovery that a goat farm was located only minutes away started it all. I had fallen in love with goats years earlier and dreamed of having goats of my own. After adjusting some things about the barn we brought home our first two goats with the intention of having organic milk, yogurt, and cheese for the family. It never crossed my mind that a business was in the making but fate had other plans.

"A friend had been helping organize a new farmers market in a nearby town and started talking to me about selling my cheeses at the market. Those conversations started a process that would take years to complete. When I set out on the path toward building a creamery very small scale facilities were a relatively new idea in New York. Large dairy farms have been common in New York and those farms primarily ship milk to be processed and packaged for sale in supermarkets. The concept that a small farm could safely store milk and produce cheese on site required open minded innovation on both my part and that of the state. Finally after what seemed like forever the cheeseroom was completed and the new milking parlor built and we went into production. We added some does to the herd and sold at two local farmers' markets in the beginning. Since then the milk line has grown to approximately 25 does and we sell year round at several regional farmers' markets. In addition we work with CSA programs offering our dairy products to their members, sell at select retail locations and our cheeses appear on local restaurant menus."
