  RamsHorn-Livingston Sanctuary
Catskill, Greene County
Hudson River Valley, New York State

From Scenic Hudson: "A swamp may not have the cachet of a mountain peak or thundering waterfall, but what it lacks in grandeur it more than makes up for in the diversity of wildlife it attracts. Plus, as RamsHorn-Livingston Sanctuary proves, swamps can be exceedingly beautiful. A hike through wildflower-filled lowlands, alongside rustling marsh grasses and over intriguing rock outcroppings in its upland forest will linger in your memory long after the boots have been unlaced.

"For a special treat, hop in a kayak or canoe. Paddling tree-shaded RamsHorn Creek, curvy as old-fashioned ribbon candy, brings you even closer to the creatures that call the sanctuary home. You'll may draw the attention of some three dozen varieties of dragonflies, whose gossamer wings exhaust the color spectrum. Great blue herons and waterfowl could launch skyward at your approach. Overhead, a bald eagle or two is likely to keep tabs on your progress. And you might spot a muskrat, beaver or river otter. In other words, while the creek may be an ideal place to "get away from it all," you'll hardly be alone."

Attractions at RamsHorn-Livingston Sanctuary
Three and a half miles of trails

Kayak and canoe launch to the river (following half-mile walk from parking area)
Note that canoe/kayak access to the Sanctuary is by way of the RamsHorn Creek that connects to the Hudson River (nearest put-in is Catskill Point).

Shakespeare on the Hudson, offering unique accommodations, is located at 216 Route 385, Catskill, NY 12414, Greene County in the upper-Hudson Valley.

From Shakespeare on the Hudson: "It is no accident that the greatest school of art that America ever produced had its birthplace at the crosshairs of Shakespeare on the Hudson. The founder of Shakespeare on the Hudson, Owen Lipstein, believes that place - the mystery of the land, the river, the running creek, the elevations, its assembled sublime totality - transmutes everything that happens there. And this spot, where Shakespeare on the Hudson sits, is infected with a magic as respected and private as Prospero's magic island. Our spot on the river is genuinely unique: one of the best places in America, and unquestionably the best spot on the Hudson. The spirit that lives here finds its way into every event, every wedding, every getaway that we host on the property."

12414, National Historic Site, Thomas Cole, pristine landscape paintings, Hudson River School, Cole, artists of the Hudson River School, artists, Historic Site, about the Hudson River School, Thomas Cole’s paintings, Catskill Thomas Cole "Historic Site"

518-943-7465
The Thomas Cole National Historic Site is located at 218 Spring Street, near the western entrance to the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, in the village of Catskill NY 12414, Greene County in the Hudson Valley.

"In the early nineteenth century, many in this country were searching for a style of art that they could call their own. Painter, poet, and essayist Thomas Cole (1801-1848) responded to this quest by creating pristine landscape paintings unlike any yet seen in America. His vision of wild and untouched scenery with majestic mountains and tangled forests stood in stark contrast to the gentle landscape images that had come before.

"Influential people of the nascent New York cultural scene embraced his work enthusiastically, and Cole became the leader of an informal alliance of landscape artists now known as the Hudson River School . Cole, Asher Durand, Frederic Church, Sanford Gifford, Jasper Cropsey, and other painters, along with literary figures such as William Cullen Bryant and James Fenimore Cooper, forged a self-consciously “American” style and landscape vision for what was still a relatively new nation.

"The artists of the Hudson River School were united by their belief that their art might lead to spiritual renewal and contribute to the formation of a uniquely American national culture. Their work established a notion of America as a new Eden, a concept that still resonates with artists, environmentalists, and landscape enthusiasts to this day."

Visit the Thomas Cole Historic Site and join a guided tour of Cole’s home and studio, see the film about his art, stroll through the flower gardens and enjoy the sweeping view of the Catskill Mountains. Take in a special lecture about the Hudson River School, or join a guided hike to the magnificent nearby places seen in Thomas Cole’s paintings.

Scenic Hudson saved this riverfront parcel from development

From Scenic Hudson: "Located midway in the Hudson River's eight-mile course between Hudson and Coxsackie (hence its name), Four-Mile Point long was a hive of activity. For 6,000 years, it was the site of a Native American tool-making workshop; the long stone blades fashioned here were used to butcher fish and game. In the 19th century, a large icehouse stored frozen blocks cut from the river — as much as 55,000 tons worth — awaiting shipment to Manhattan during warmer months. While traces of this bustling past remain, the land now invites more tranquil pursuits. In fact for a small park, there's an awful lot to explore. An observation platform invites up-close inspection of a small wetland that furnishes critical habitat for birds and amphibians. Grand Hudson River views await those who reach a bluff-top overlook. And the walk is all downhill to the piece de resistance — the river itself, where a fishing pole, a kayak or a picnic would come in handy, but none are necessary to savor the scenic splendor."

The Catskill Park is a mountainous region of public and private lands in Southeastern New York's Ulster, Greene, Delaware and Sullivan Counties - the "forest preserve" counties. Ninety-eight peaks over 3,000 feet high form an impressive skyline. Its blend of public and private lands is typical of large parks in Europe, where people and unique lands have coexisted for centuries. The Catskill Forest Preserve is the state land within the Catskill Park. Since its creation in 1885, it has grown from 34,000 to 287,500 acres. An 1894 amendment to the New York State Constitution (now Article 14) directs:
"the lands of the State now owned or hereafter acquired, constituting the forest preserve as now fixed by law, shall be forever kept as wild forest lands. They shall not be leased, sold or exchanged, or be taken by any corporation, public or private, nor shall the timber thereon be sold, removed or destroyed."

The forest preserve has thousands of acres of forests with meadows, remnants of old farmsteads, lakes, rivers, springs, waterfalls, cliffs, fire towers, bears, rattlesnakes and other wildlife, rare plants and animals. Also, there are hundreds of miles of abandoned woods roads and trails to enjoy. Today, it serves as watershed, recreation area and ecological and scenic reserve.

      Kaaterskill Falls
Kaaterskill Falls is located in the Catskill Mountains, in the town of Hunter 12441, Greene County in the Hudson Valley. Kaaterskill Falls is a two-drop waterfall located in the eastern Catskill Mountains of New York, on the north side of Kaaterskill Clove, between the hamlets of Haines Falls and Palenville. The dual cascades total 260 feet (79 m) in height, making it one of the higher waterfalls in New York, and one of the taller waterfalls in the eastern United States.

    Waterfall Statistics
Total height of both falls = 260 feet (79 m)
Height of the longest drop = 180 feet (60 m)
    Number of drops 2

The Kaaterskill Falls are one of America's oldest tourist attractions, with it appearing in some of the most prominent books, essays, poems and paintings of the early 19th century. Long before Alexis de Tocqueville's famous essay on America, Kaaterskill Falls was lauded as a place where a traveler could see a wilder image, a sort of primeval Eden. Beginning with Thomas Cole's first visit in 1825, they became an icon subject for painters of the Hudson River School, setting the wilderness ideal for American landscape painting. The Falls also inspired "Catterskill Falls", a poem by William Cullen Bryant.
    Source: Several articles including Wikipedia.com

The word is Hiking through the Catskills, on the way to Kaaterskill Falls, is Bastion Falls . Although smaller and not as dramatic as Kaaterskill Falls, Bastion Falls, 30 feet high, is quite striking and beautiful. Be sure to spend some time enjoying this smaller fall.

    Warning
It appears that people have had serious accidents climbing to the top of the falls. Do not be tempted to climb to the top of the falls as missteps on the slippery rocks have resulted in serious accidents and even fatalities.
