"He studied sculpting with Moshe Sternschuss (1947 — 1950) and Rudi Lehmann (1954) and then went to London where he enrolled at the St. Martin’s School of Art and Design. There he became a student of Anthony Caro and Reg Butler." Kadishman finished his studies in 1960 and returned to Israel in 1972 where he was awarded the Dizengoff Prize for sculpture in 1990 and the Israel Prize for sculpture in 1995.

Menashe Kadishman, Suspended, 1977
"The two simple forms of Menashe Kadishman’s Suspended engage in a gravity-defying balance that belies expectation. Seen from a distance, atop one of two adjacent hilltops, the sculpture’s balancing act is surprising. Viewed up close, the massive scale of the steel work becomes apparent and its structural viability even more difficult to comprehend. With no visible evidence of the engineering holding the sculpture up, Suspended prompts contemplation of the relationship between its two conjoined, towering masses, coupled with questions about what lies below ground. Rich and rusted, the patina of the weathered steel wraps the stark geometric shapes in a skin-like sheath." Sourced from: Menashe Kadishman at Storm King Art Center

Kadishman's sculptures of the 1960s and 1970s were Minimalist in style. When viewing Kadishman's Suspended the sculpture appears to defy the laws of gravity.
