    • "Clearwater is everything a Folk Festival should be; good music, good people and good fun. You'll find your community is bigger when you leave than when you came.",
      Ani DiFranco

      Josh Ritter

    About Clearwater
"Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. is a 501(c)3 tax exempt nonprofit, member- supported corporation whose mission is to preserve and protect the Hudson River. In 1966, folk music legend and environmental activist Pete Seeger, in despair over the pollution of his beloved Hudson River, announced plans to “build a boat to save the river”. At the time, the Hudson was rank with raw sewage, toxic chemicals and oil pollution; fish had disappeared over many miles of its length. Seeger believed a majestic replica of the sloops that sailed the Hudson in the 18th and 19th centuries would bring people to the river, where they could experience its beauty and be moved to preserve it. Inspired by that vision, the 106-feet-long tall ship Clearwater was built and launched in 1969. The sloop was among the first vessels in the U.S. to conduct science-based environmental education aboard a sailing ship, virtually creating the template by which such programs are conducted around the world today.

"Since the launch of the Clearwater, more than 430,000 young people and hundreds of thousands of adults have experienced their first real look at an estuary’s ecosystem—fish, invertebrates, water chemistry and ecological principals—aboard the sloop. Clearwater’s environmental education programs now serve more than 15,000 students annually, and the organization also educates over 200 teachers each year through SUNY New Paltz, Pace University and other institutions. Clearwater’s members have helped advocate for the Clean Water Act, the Hudson River Park Act and removal of PCB’s from the Hudson.

"The Clearwater has become America’s Environmental Flagship, and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 for its role in the environmental movement. Each summer, Clearwater re-connects Hudson Valley residents with their cultural heritage and traditions by bringing them down to the river for the Great Hudson River Revival, the country’s oldest music and environmental festival. The organization and its local sloop clubs also sponsor smaller local riverfront festivals throughout the year. Clearwater’s unique approach to public outreach has made the Clearwater a symbol of grassroots action through hands-on learning, music and celebration."

12544, Farm, biodynamic, vegetable farm, CSA shares, What is a CSA, Community Supported Agriculture, Lineage Farm "CSA Farm"

    518-755-3391
Lineage Farm, a 3-acre biodynamic vegetable farm, offering CSA shares, is located at Route 217, Mellenville, NY 12544, Columbia County in the upper-Hudson Valley.

From Lineage Farm: October 30th Posting
This week’s share (subject to change) - Garlic, Sweet Peppers, Hakurei Turnips, Mustard Greens (spicy, mild, and mix), Arugula, Purple Top Turnips, Butternut Squash, Kale, Tat Soi…

Dear Friends, Neighbors, and CSA Members
The wind certainly worked up an appetite for our final Friday harvest, whipping the row covers about and almost carrying away a few harvest boxes. Carmine came by to help out just in time for the rain to start. With Jon and my rain gear way down the field in the greenhouse, we hunkered down in the van for a few moments respite, and successfully waited out the shower. Somehow we both still managed to get soaked today! Now, though, I write you from the warmth of dry clothing in our apartment, looking out at the still breezy yet completely brilliant, bright, and blue sky.

Last week was a busy, frost-filled daily harvest, bringing in the last of our sweet peppers, our storage capacity of hakurei salad turnips, beets, and most of the different winter radishes. The eggplants, cherry tomatoes, flowers, and okra bit some serious dust, but such is to be expected (even looked forward to!) as we move quickly through fall towards winter. We also got some of the hardy yet still somewhat delicate greens covered with row cover, to protect those precious leaf tips from frost burn for a while yet. Why, you may ask, do we go to all this trouble just as the regular season CSA is ending?

Well, for one thing, if you haven’t heard yet – we are offering a bonus share to folks who sign up for next year now. Poughkeepsie, this means sign up by Sunday for this Tuesday’s bonus delivery. Brooklyn, you’ve got a few extra days – sign up by Thursday for the next Saturday. In fact, we’re still delivering some restaurant orders to Greenpoint, so signing up by any of the next three Thursdays would guarantee you a share for that following Saturday! Offer valid for November only! Hudson and on-farm members, sorry not to have had any literature or firm decisions by your last pick-up this week, but talk (or email) with us – you’re so close by, any time by the end of November would work for us (deposit in exchange for a bonus share).

If the $100 deposit feels a bit weighty to you and your budget at the moment, talk with us! We are flexible folks, even though neither one of us reaches our toes too easily at the moment.

Also, if next year is a bit too far away at the moment for you to predict your whereabouts and vegetable eating habits, but you know you’ll be craving more carrots by the end of next week, take a look at our bulk order offers below. Email lineagefarm@riseup.net with your orders at least 48 hours before the next time we’ll see you, and we’ll happily pack up a sack for you.

The baby is now firmly rooted with one foot in my ribs (or so it seems), growing quickly as my ever expanding belly attests. With somewhere in the ballpark of 6 to 10 weeks to go, we’re busy cleaning up, arranging, and setting up our new household-to-be. Jon has spackled many cracks in the soon to be freshly painted bedroom and nursery walls, and I keep busy dreaming up new projects that just have to be done before mid-December. Thank you everyone for your well-wishes, funny and heartwarming baby and birthing stories, bed-time books and newborn swaddling blankets. This is bound to be one happy new community member, eager to meet you all as next season rolls around.

    Your Farmers,Jen and Jon

    What is a CSA?
What is a CSA? When your friends or neighbors, your visiting parents or grown children ask where it is that you go each week, what it is that you are doing, how it is that you return with a bag full of fresh vegetables without setting foot in a store – what is your answer? Do you relegate it to the simple form of outward appearances – a trade of up-front money that gets you so many vegetables each week? Or do you enter in depth to the ways in which a CSA carries the potential to alter the market, re-configure the economy, and birth new, virtuous, and loving forms of community?

When approaching those unfamiliar with Community Supported Agriculture, the simple, practical description of a CSA’s weekly vegetable shares can be a helpful starting point. In exchange for providing our farm with funding early in the spring in the form of membership fees, we (your farmers) deliver a variety of vegetables to your neighborhood each week for 22 weeks, from early June to the beginning of November.

In further conversation, and in furthering your own understanding of just what you’ve gotten yourselves in to, you may find the following to be quite thought-provoking.

Community Supported Agriculture is a concept describing a Community Based Organization including Producers (Farmers) and Consumers (that would be You, Current and Future Members). The Consumers agree to provide up front support early in the season to help the farm secure funds for the upcoming season when many of the larger annual purchases are taking place. The Farm provides, to the best of their abilities, a selection of high quality vegetables throughout the growing season – as well as a space for the community to come together around shared values and beautiful food. The interaction and cooperation inherent in a CSA’s arrangement create certain possibilities:

    518-758-9689
Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is located at 1013 Old Post Road, Kinderhook NY 12106, Columbia County in the Hudson Valley. "The history associated with Martin Van Buren and the culture of ante bellum America are deep, rich veins for discovering much about the country. Likewise, his farm Lindenwald provides a microcosm for us to learn about the transformations taking place in America during the 1840's and 1850's.

"Van Buren was preeminent among the second generation of American politicians. As eighth President, the first born under the U.S. flag, he continued building the Democratic Party he helped organize. His administration faced daunting challenges: The nation suffered a severe and lingering economic depression. Crises with Great Britain, Spain, and the Republic of Texas taxed his diplomatic skills.

"Most troubling throughout his political career was the issue of extending slavery into new states. Van Buren opposed extension while still trying to cultivate a coalition of northern and southern interests. The issue divided the nation and his party and foreshadowed the whirlpool of frustration, anger and violence which was to consume the country in the 1860's."

New York State Report Cards for Columbia County

"The New York State District Report Card is an important part of the Board of Regents’ effort to raise learning standards for all students. It provides information to the public on the district’s status and the status of schools within the district under the State and federal accountability systems, on student performance, and on other measures of school and district performance. Knowledge gained from the report card on a school district’s strengths and weaknesses can be used to improve instruction and services to students. State assessments are designed to help ensure that all students reach high learning standards. They show whether students are getting the knowledge and skills they need to succeed at the elementary, middle, and commencement levels and beyond. The State requires that students who are not making appropriate progress toward the standards receive academic intervention services." by NYSED.gov

The New York State Report Cards provide enrollment, demographic, attendance, suspension, dropout, teacher, assessment, accountability, graduation rate, post-graduate plan, career and technical education, and fiscal data for public and charter schools, districts, and the State. The report cards consist of three parts:

12173, Farm, certified organic, CSA farm, NOFA-NY Certified Organic farm, CSA program, local farmer's markets, wholesale outlets, Organic CSA Products, Vegetables, Optional Egg Share, Optional Winter CSA Share Red Oak Farm "NOFA-NY Organic CSA"

Red Oak Farm, a certified organic CSA farm is located at 1921 Route 9 Stuyvesant, NY 12173, Columbia County in the upper-Hudson Valley.

From Red Oak Farm: "Simultaneously, Taylor and Courtney Tribble, and Paul Colatrella and Amy Brown were looking to start a farm. Paul and Amy, professionals in NYC with a weekend property in upstate NY, had some good agricultural land and a remodeled barn but lacked the time and know-how to turn their dreams of a farm into reality. Thus, they began their search for folks to work the land and act as caretakers for the property. At the same time, Taylor and Courtney Tribble, experienced farmers who lacked the capital to buy land and equipment, were looking for an opportunity to start a farm of their own. As is often the case today, a new farming model was what was required and The Farm and the two families have grown together.

"Red Oak Farm is a NOFA-NY Certified Organic farm. We are located on 85 acres of open pasture, cultivated cropland and woodlands, 60 acres of which is under an agricultural conservation easement. We currently manage about 12 acres planted in vegetables, small fruits, herbs and open pasture for our heritage-breed laying hens. Our farm specializes in greens, berries, storage and late/early season crops, as well as both culinary and medicinal herbs.

"We distribute our farm products through our CSA program, local farmer's markets, wholesale outlets, and special orders. We also offer a selection of herbal teas, dried herbs and other herbal products."

12106, upper-Hudson Valley, organic certification, Farmer's Pledge, certified organic, 100% grassfed, community supported farm, biodynamic farm, organic grain, vegetables, herbs Roxbury Farm "Biodynamic Farm"

    518-758-8558
Roxbury Farm, a CSA biodynamic farm, is located at 2501 New York 9H, Kinderhook, NY 12106, Columbia County in the upper-Hudson Valley.

From Roxbury Farm: "Roxbury Farm is a community supported farm. We grow vegetables, herbs, and grass fed pork, lamb, and beef for over 1000 shareholders representing over 1200 families in four communities - Columbia County, the Capital Region, Westchester County, and Manhattan - on 300 acres in Kinderhook, New York.

"Our farmland has been taken off the market, permanently. It can never be bought or sold again. It can only be leased, and only by a farmer who commits to farming it. The lease is lifelong and inheritable, and the fee is based on the agricultural value of the land, not the market value. Affordable housing for the farmer and farm employees is also protected in perpetuity. Even in the rapidly rising country home market two and a half hours from New York City, this land and housing will always be available and affordable to a farmer.

"Roxbury Farm uses farming practices that developed out of anthroposophy. These practices allow for a great diversity of living organism on his or her farm to thrive as those systems have proven to be most efficient in harboring life and storing energy. Every aspect of the farm makes its own unique contribution to the whole. When a farm is biodynamic it is transformed from a factory, producing food and generating profit, to a being that has its own characteristics with associated strengths and weaknesses that are honored."

    Farming Practices
"All our produce is grown without the input of any synthetic or artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Almost all of the vegetables are started from seed on the farm either in the field or in one of our greenhouses. The land is fertilized with aged compost and green manure crops. A very carefully planned rotation allows fields to be taken out of production to build soil fertility. This means we cultivate twice as many acres as needed for vegetable crop production. The result is that we have very low incidences of pests and diseases. We believe that soil health is the basis for sound farming.

"We chose to sign the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York's Farmer's Pledge in place of becoming certified organic. We feel the Farmer's Pledge is a reflection of why many farmers chose to become organic in the first place; to treat the people who grow the food, the customers who eat the food, and the land and animals that produce the food with dignity and respect.

"Livestock are important part of our farm. We raise sheep, pigs, and beef cattle. We strive to provide our animals with environments that best suite the instinctual needs of the animal. Our beef and lamb are 100% grass-fed and our pigs are pastured and fed organic grain."

Thompson-Finch Farm, a NOFA-NY certified organic U-Pick farm since 1988, offering pick-your-own strawberries is located at 750 Wiltsie Bridge Road, Ancram NY 12502, Columbia County in the upper-Hudson Valley.

From Thompson-Finch: "CertifieThompson-Finch farm has been in Marnie's family for five generations. We, Don and Marnie, have been cultivating this land since 1982. We started out by growing a wide variety of vegetables and selling to local restaurants and stores. With our first small field of strawberries, we saw that people yearned to pick their own food and to be connected to the earth and what they eat. As the years passed, our strawberry fields grew to 4.5 acres and our orchard to 1.5 acre; we also added 1 acre of blueberries and one-half acre of raspberries. Our dedicated customers now come from New York and the greater New England region. We are proud of our clean fields and orchards and most importantly you, our most valued and honored customers. You are what keep us going and striving every year to make your visit to our farm a happy and memorable family outing."

Before coming to the farm call 518-329-7578 for the latest picking conditions.
