Slow Roots Farm, specializing in organically grown vegetables in accord with Farmers Pledge, is located at 205 Hidden Valley Road, Kingston, NY 12401, Ulster County in the mid-Hudson Valley.

From Slow Roots Farm: "This Wednesday October 10 marks the last summer pickup at the farm but the harvest will continue for a while as the fall share begins next week. I wanted to thank all of you for participating in this summer season and for handling the assortment of produce with openness and grace. I know it takes special people to open a weird basement door and be surprised each week with what you’ll be eating. I hope you enjoyed being creative and were able to avoid some trips to the grocery store, a much weirder place, as a result. Please know that you are a huge part of how I make a living and that this relationship is so vital to the way Slow Roots Farm operates. Stay in touch, I hope to see all of you soon."

Farmers Pledge
The Farmers Pledge seeks to describe sustainable practices in a document that growers can attest is an accurate description of how they farm. It serves as a bridge between consumers and farmers who value healthy food, strong local economies, fair working conditions and wages, the humane treatment of animals, and care of the land.

CSA 2013 - Vegetables
"Over 250 varieties of vegetables will be grown for the 2013 season with selection based on flavor, nutrition, vitality, beauty, reliability and diversity. All the essential vegetables are grown and offered with the exception of corn and sweet potatoes, I am getting there. I also grow more unique crops like kohlrabi, okra, tatsoi, hon tsai tai, and tomatillos as well. Over twenty-five different varieties of tomatoes and lettuce are grown as well as dozens of varieties of peppers, eggplants and chilies. So expect not only tasty, high quality produce but some unlikely shapes and colors as well. The produce varies with the season and the weather and each week will bring new tastes to your home. Experience the difference of nutritious vegetables that were harvested just hours before you pick them up. It really is impossible to get fresher produce unless you grow it yourself. I am always available for feedback and suggestions and can make adjustments when appropriate."

Community Supported Agriculture
"CSA is an arrangement in which the farmer asks the consumer to pay at the beginning of the season for a weekly distribution of vegetables. The member assumes some risk by paying upfront for an undisclosed amount of food and the farmer takes a chance by promising vegetables before they are harvested.

"The relationship is based on health and trust and the benefits go well beyond those that can be quantified in monetary terms alone. Members enjoy access to fresh, nutritious, organically grown produce at lower than market costs. They also have the opportunity to develop a relationship with the source and purveyor of that food. The farmer gains a guaranteed market for his product and much needed capital at a vulnerable time of year. The vision of keeping farms growing and growers farming has far reaching impacts on the health of land, community, individual and planet.

"This model is not for everyone as it is a little different from how most Americans are used to acquiring their food. I believe that you will come to fully embrace these differences and I know that your body will. Please consider the responsibilities and rewards and decide if a CSA is right for you. I look forward to the opportunity of growing your food and sharing stories of weather, wonder and culinary delights with you."
