From the owner: "Our chef mandates the use of local, organic, and sustainable products, never compromising quality. The simplicity and bold flavors of our dishes stimulates a culinary driven dialogue between diners, allowing them to find their common ground through food. The restaurant’s country-modern décor juxtaposed against our “new comfort” cuisine will have even the most timid diner savoring new flavors, without feeling overwhelmed."

Noise level = Very loud
Outdoor Dining
The word is
Good food and a friendly bar. The noise level can get very loud, if you're looking for quiet conversation, in good weather; ask for a table on the porch. Checked their menu online and didn't see any organic or grass-fed options so I called and asked if they had anything organic or grass-fed on the menu. I was told "we don't know what our purveyor sends us".

That makes for a very small carbon footprint and really fresh food!

The word is
The recurring complaint from most everyone is "this place is beyond loud", so loud that "we couldn't hear each other speak". The farm-to-table concept is wonderful, the decor is country chic, and some of the dishes are delicious, but the stress of the deafening noise is overwhelming. "I can not imagine anyone returning for a second attempt at an evening here".

The Hammond Museum was designed by Natalie Hays Hammond who borrowed the basic principles and ideas of the Stroll Garden incorporating indigenous plantings with popular and rare Japanese and Chinese specimens. "As people often travel to escape routine problems and obligations, or to escape themselves, so should they find peace in an unhurried journey through a stroll garden."
"To please the eye, there are the textures of stone scrolled with the delicate designs of lichen, the patterns of tree trunks and clusters of foliage, the play of light and shadow, the varying shades of green as well as the seasonal colors of great beauty. To please the ear, there are the songs of native birds, the hum of insects the chorale of frogs and the occasional splash of carp in the lake, the crunch of pebbles underfoot, the whisper of wind through the pines. To please the sense of scent, there are dry pine needles in the sun, the fragrance of flowering shrubs, a breeze through mimosa or the pungency of loam after a night rain."

"North Salem is situated twenty four miles north of the village of White Plains, distant fifty six miles from New York, and one hundred and twenty two from Albany, bounded north by Dutchess County, east by the state of Connecticut, south by South Salem, and west by Somers. Its extent east and west is about six miles, medial width four miles.
"Prior to the Revolution, the two towns of Upper and Lower Salem constituted the old township of Salem proper, within Cortlandt's manor. The present township was erected on the 7th of March, 1788.
"Upon the 8th of August, A.D. 1699, Sachima Wicker, sachem of Kightawonck and his associated sold to Stephanus van Cortlandt, all their rights as owners and proprietors in the "land lying and being within Cortlandt's manor, beginning on the south side of Kightawonck creek, and so along the said creek to a place called Kewighecock, and from thence along a creek called Peppeneghek to the head thereof, and then due east to the limits of Connecticut, and from thence northerly along the limits of Connecticut aforesaid to the river Mutighticoos ten miles, and from thence due west to the Hudson river, &c., &c.
"A portion of the Salem lands, if not the whole, may have originally belonged to the great sachem Catonah, whose territory extended from the Sound as far north as Danbury in Connecticut' his possessions on the west appear to have been bounded by the western line of Bedford."
North Salem this sixth day of April, 1790
"A town meeting was held at the town house in North Salem, and that John Quick, Esq., was chosen moderator, (after which) the freeholders and inhabitants of said town proceeded on to choosing town officers, and doing all other business which concerned said town. . .
"The surface of North Salem is in part covered with lofty hills' the soil, various, but chiefly composed of 'a gravelly and clay loam, well adapted to grass and summer crops.' The course of the Mutighticoos river, through the centre of this town is marked by beautiful mountain scenery, and rich tracts of meadow land, which skirt the margin of the stream. The Mutighticoos empties in the Croton a little south of Dean's bridge. In the northeast corner of the town lies Peach pond, a large sheet of water covering over four hundred acres of ground. At no great distance from it is situated Beaver pond.
"The village of North Salem occupies a beautiful position on the north bank of the Mutighticoos, commanding a fine view of the valley and surrounding mountains. It contains about 200 inhabitants, thirty-five dwellings, on Episcopal, one Presbyterian, and one Methodist and one Universalist church, two taverns, three stores, one paper mill, one grist mill, and one clothiers' works. A little east of the village stands the North Salem Academy.
"This edifice was erected between the year 1770 and 1775, by Stephen de Lancey, one of the principal proprietors of this town. It was intended for his own residence, but was not finished as such, as he soon after removed. In 1786 it was purchased by a company and completed as an Academy, which went into operation about that date, under the care of the Rev. Amzi Lewis. . .
"For the last eight years North Salem Academy has held a respectable standing among its sister institutions in this part of the state; sometime numbering nearly one hundred students . . . During the revolution, the Academy was used as a jail and court house for the detention and trial of refractory tories. Here one Paine was tried and condemned as a spy; he was executed about half a mile from the Academy, though it appears that circumstances afterward threw some doubt upon his guilt . . . It is said that a reprieve was forwarded from head-quarters, and that when the unfortunate man was swung off, the bearer had just reached the Episcopal church, which was a mile as the road then ran, from the place of execution; he was of course too late."

Salem Golf Club is located at 18 Bloomer Road, North Salem, NY 10560. Development of the Salem Golf Club property began during the summer of 1965. Edward Ryder was engaged to design and build an 18-hole golf course. The course has undergone only subtle changes over the years – a state-of-the art irrigation system was installed in 1998 serviced by a series of ponds on the golf course. Salem Golf Club opened on May 19, 1967 with 300 members and has remained strictly a golf club.

As part of the Westchester Library System the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library is connected to a borrowing network which includes public and academic libraries in the county and libraries in the NY metro area, NY state and beyond. If you want a book, AV item or magazine article not on our shelves, we'll be happy to send out a request for it. You can also order books and AV titles located at other Westchester public libraries online (Search Library Catalogs) from your home computer and have them delivered to the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library.
Children's Programs
In addition to weekly storytimes for children, there are regular craft programs, a summer reading game, pajama storytimes and special programs throughout the year.
Online Databases
A large array of online databases is available on the Westchester Library System website. These databases can be accessed in the Library and also remotely from any computer with Internet access.
Internet
When you need help navigating the confusing maze of the Web, click on the "Reference & Research Guides." The public librarians in Westchester have chosen the most useful web sites and organized them into categories. "Just For Kids" (OWLS) is a good place for children to begin their exploration of the Internet.

We invite you to St. James Episcopal Church. The Episcopal Church is is a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion. St. James was established at the inception of this country in 1731. Our roots go deep.
We are a "small country parish" which harkens back to pastoral times and yet our outlook is contemporary. We enjoy intimacy with one another and our neighborhood as we seek to live vibrant lives of faith. We pride ourselves on being inclusive and welcoming to all - young and old, single and coupled, rich and poor, inquisitive and skeptical. We hope to find a deep spirituality and to be a force for good in the world and community. St. James preserves and respects traditions as well as honoring new events. We do this in our life of prayer, music and fellowship. In a time where so many seek community, St. James is a haven and home for many.
