Welcome to the School of Arts and Sciences of The College of New Rochelle, New York State’s first Catholic liberal arts college for women. We are a small learning community with a tranquil campus nestled in a residential area just outside of New York City - just 30 minutes from Grand Central Station in midtown Manhattan. Our strong academic program and unique location combine to offer distinct advantages to our students, and we pride ourselves on the educational experience we provide.
Since its founding by the Ursuline Order in 1904, The College of New Rochelle has maintained as a hallmark its reputation for quality. Students in the School of Arts & Sciences experience that quality in important ways — in a distinctive curriculum that combines the liberal arts with professional preparation, in a nationally recognized faculty of dedicated teachers and gifted scholars, and in an academic community that values and fosters excellence, integrity, service and tolerance.
Our students are a diverse group of young women from the United States and other countries who bring with them special talents, interests and aspirations. They are classmates, project partners, roommates and friends. Whether preparing for a career in broadcasting, teaching, business, the arts, the health professions or human services, they share a common educational experience — classes are small and student-centered, courses are designed to meet the challenge of 21st century global citizenship, and programs offer ample opportunity for internships in places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the United Nations.
At The College of New Rochelle, women are provided the opportunities and tools to advance to leadership in society. Our commitment to women benefits men and women by permitting both to transform and transcend traditional societal roles. We integrate the liberal arts with solid career preparation, and from our Ursuline heritage we invoke and discuss our values unself-consciously and unapologetically. This is a privileged place where intellect and compassion journey together.

It is with joy that we announce the purchase of a home for the Empty Hand Zen Center in downtown New Rochelle. We now are the owners of the historic "Trolley Turnaround Building," most recently known as the Backstreet Gallery, at 45 Lawton St., directly across from the Library Park.
While Zen has its roots in the Buddhist tradition of China, Korea and Japan, it is a spiritual practice of increasing interest in the Western world. This practice is open to those of all traditions. Many find that this meditation serves to enliven and enrich their own religious faith.
Zazen (seated meditation) is the core of our practice. This involves working with body, breath and mind: entering into deep silence and stillness; opening to a fresh awareness moment after moment. Half-hour periods of zazen are followed by ten minutes of kinhin (walking meditation). We also join together in Sutra Chanting, Dharma study, and Caretaking (work-practice). All these practices are designed to help us bring clear attention and an open Heart/Mind into our everyday living.

Glen Island Park, 105-acre in size, is located in New Rochelle NY 10805, Westchester County. Glen Island is an island property connected to New Rochelle by a drawbridge built in the 1920s. "After Playland, Glen Island is the second most widely used park in the County Parks system. One of Westchester’s unique jewels . . . Today the islands have been merged with substantial fill areas totaling 130 acres and providing a beautiful crescent shaped beach with access to the Long Island Sound. In the hot days of summer, enjoy swimming at the beach.
Glen Island Park also offers picnic pavilions, and open picnic areas, boat launching, pathways, a catering hall and a restaurant, formerly Glen Island Casino of Big Band era fame. Cannons, sculptures and castles with coursed rubble stone, arched openings and round towers still remain from the days of John Starin’s resort. The castles, reminiscent of those in Germany's Rhineland, were constructed on their present site in the late 19th century for use as a beer garden and restaurant.
The boat ramp handles 65-70 launchings per weekend. The bathhouse was originally built in a Neo-Georgian style with a cupola marking the center of the front façade. A courtyard looks out to the beach and is completed by a colonnade. The bridge, bridge house, seawall and castles are all eligible for listing on the Register of Historic Places."

The New Rochelle Fire Department is located at 90 Beaufort Place, New Rochelle, NY 10801 in Westchester County.
New Rochelle Fire Department - History
"Thanks to a $2,400 appropriation in 1861 by the village fathers, New Rochelle's first fire company -- known as the Enterprise Hook and Ladder and Bucket Company No. 1 -- was organized. Half the money paid for a hook and ladder, $400 for other equipment, and $800 for a firehouse. Shortly after, another group of citizens began to organize an independent fire company known as Huguenot Company No. 1, which became the first company to get its apparatus ahead of Enterprise.
"With this, the history of the New Rochelle Fire Department began, but the early days of fire fighting were not easy. Both companies had ladders, but no hoses. Neither had an engine to pump water. And, access to water was scarce.
"The late 1800s saw many other volunteer fire companies form as well the introduction of a hand pumping fire engine formerly used by the New York City Fire Department. In effect, this was the dawn of the modern era of fighting fires.
"Shortly after the turn of the century, $50,000 was appropriated to fully modernize the department and set in motion the transition from a volunteer force to a paid one. The monies were used for new a fire headquarters and the hiring of the first two paid firemen to drive the new equipment.
"The late '20s saw the last of the volunteer firemen and by 1929, there were 99 paid firemen in the department.
"The '30s, '40s and '50s were marked by continued modernization, but just as importantly, the department focused on fire prevention and received national recognition for its efforts. In the midst of all this, the department had to reach back to the days of volunteers. With the outbreak of World War II, many of the men who served in the department went to fight, and many of the positions in the department were filled by an auxiliary force.
"The '60s and '70s saw the creation of the Emergency Reporting System, the movement of the fire headquarters to City Hall, the replacement of all of the City's fire apparatus, and heavy emphasis on mobile inspections and fire prevention. The early '80s were marked by major steps in the emergency medical field with the introduction of EMT classes for firefighters and great improvement in the medical equipment on fire apparatus."
New Rochelle Fire Department - Today
"Today's Fire Department is a full service department, capable of handling fires, rescues, extrications, and hazardous material incidents. The department aggressively pursues fire prevention and code enforcement programs, and is responsible for plan reviews, underground tank installations, and control of all places of public assembly. The department also issues licenses and permits in an effort to control potentially hazardous or even dangerous situations.
"Keeping buildings and other living areas in good, safe condition is a major responsibility of the department. By controlling illegal, dangerous occupancies and tenant overcrowding residents are kept safe.
"The New Rochelle Fire Department is known as the premiere fire department in the area because of its wide range of services and its professionally trained staff. And, with five fire houses strategically stationed through out the City, when a fire breaks out, or if there's a medical emergency or disaster, help is only a short distance away."

St. John's Episcopal Church - Wilmot

|
| |
St. John's, Wilmot, is an Episcopal parish located in New Rochelle, convenient to Bronxville, Eastchester, and Scarsdale, as well as Larchmont, and other Sound Shore Communities, from which it draws its members. Located in an historic district of New Rochelle, near Thomas Paine Cottage, its buildings date to colonial times. St. John's was organized as an Episcopal parish in 1858, and is one of the oldest churches in Westchester County, New York. Norman Rockwell, who lived nearby, attended this church and his children were baptized here.
It is an intimate parish, drawing its parishioners not only from other Episcopal parishes, but from Roman Catholic, and other Protestant denominations, as well as other religious traditions. Following the church service, an informal coffee and tea reception is held in the adjoining St. Francis' Cottage.
St. John's Church is unique in its makeup, and the congregation is made up of varied backgrounds, ages, denominations, sexual orientations, races, countries of origin, and more. Ours is an amalgamation of the living word of Christ Jesus.

The Westchester Chamber Orchestra (WCO) is a fully professional orchestra, quickly becoming known in and outside of Westchester County for its first rate and inspiring performances, world class soloists, innovative programming and its world premiers of meaningful new works it has commissioned.
The Westchester Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1984 by its Artistic Director, Barry Charles Hoffman. For many years the WCO gave its concerts at various sites throughout Westchester County and in 1994 began its association with Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.
At Westchester Chamber Orchestra concerts, great performances of the standard repertoire are blended with lesser known but equally beautiful works. Innovative programming has also included concert themes such as "Music of the British Isles," "Music of the Heart," and "Music of Appalachia and Appalachian Spring," the latter with renown folk artists Jay Unger and Molly Mason. The WCO has presented many world class soloists in its performances. These have included: harpist Barbara Allen, violinists Glenn Dicterow and Yuri Kharenko, violists Karen Dreyfus and Emanuel Vardi, clarinetist Stanley Drucker, oboist Matt Sullivan, bassoonist Lennie Hindell and tenor Robert White. You will be treated to outstanding soloists and inspired performances of some of the greatest works of German composers over the past three centuries; from Gluck to Beethoven to Schumann to Schoenberg. The richness and rewards are here.
